FAQ — Vesperi Design | Handmade Vegetable Tanned Leather Goods

Frequently Asked Questions

Every Vesperi piece is designed, cut, stitched, and finished by hand — made to order in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Here are answers to some of the most common questions about our handmade leather goods.

Leather & Materials

What type of leather do you use?

I work primarily with full-grain vegetable tanned leather — the cornerstone of every Vesperi product. Vegetable tanned leather is tanned using natural tannins from tree bark, a slow process that produces denser, firmer leather with exceptional longevity. It is the leather of choice for heritage footwear, horse tack, and quality goods made to last a lifetime. Vegetable tanned leather develops a rich patina with age — darkening, softening, and taking on the marks of how it has been worn.

I source all my vegetable tanned leather from reputable UK and European suppliers. Full-grain means the complete hide surface is retained — not corrected, not sanded, not split. It retains all the natural grain and character of the hide. Where possible, I use leather from hides that are a by-product of the food industry.

I also occasionally use chrome tanned leather for certain products. Chrome tanned leather is softer and more flexible from the outset, produced using chemical salts in a faster process. It is consistent batch to batch and generally less expensive. However, it does not develop a patina in the way vegetable tanned leather does — it tends to peel and deteriorate over a shorter lifespan. I will always specify which leather is used on each product page.

What makes vegetable tanned leather different?

Most leather goods on the high street are made from chrome tanned leather — a faster, cheaper process using chemical salts that tends to peel and deteriorate within a few years of regular use.

Vegetable tanned leather uses natural tannins from tree bark. It is slower to produce and more expensive. The result is firmer leather that improves with age rather than wearing out — darkening, softening, and taking on the marks of how it has been worn. A vegetable tanned leather belt worn daily for ten years will look better than when it was new. That is why vegetable tanned leather is used in heritage footwear, horse tack, and quality leather goods intended to last a lifetime.

Will my vegetable tanned leather product change over time?

Yes — and this is one of the defining characteristics of vegetable tanned leather. Unlike chrome tanned leather, which tends to degrade, vegetable tanned leather improves with age. Here is what to expect:

Darkening from sunlight: UV exposure gradually deepens the colour of vegetable tanned leather over time. A belt worn regularly in summer will noticeably darken compared to one kept in a drawer. This is a natural and desirable property of the leather.

Darkening from oils and care products: The natural oils in your skin, leather balm, conditioning creams, and even the products you wear near the belt all contribute to darkening the leather. A belt worn against bare skin will develop its patina faster than one worn over clothing.

Softening and conforming: Vegetable tanned leather starts firmer than chrome tanned leather. With regular use, it softens, flexes, and conforms to the shape of your body and how you wear it. The crease patterns and wear marks that develop are unique to you — no two pieces age identically.

Developing a patina: The combination of UV exposure, body oils, flexing, and conditioning creates a patina — a rich, lived-in sheen that is unique to each piece. This is not damage. It is the leather telling the story of its use.

What hardware do you use?

I use quality metal hardware throughout. Stainless steel buckles are standard — they will not rust, tarnish, or discolour with sweat or moisture, and will remain unchanged over time. Brass buckles are also available as an option on certain products — brass develops a patina just like vegetable tanned leather does, deepening in colour with age and use, complementary to the leather.

Chicago screws are used to fasten buckles on all belt products. These allow the buckle to be serviced or replaced individually without needing to replace the whole belt. I use brass Chicago screws or nickel-plated Chicago screws depending on the buckle finish. All edges are burnished by hand for a clean, finished profile. Belt keepers are included with every belt.

Orders & Delivery

How long will my order take?

All the items listed on the website are available to ship. Once your order is placed, please allow 1–2 working days for your item to be prepared before posting. During peak periods (November–December), please allow additional time.

Once posted, UK standard delivery is 2–3 working days. Tracked delivery is available for all orders.

Do you ship outside the UK?

At present, I ship within the UK only. For international orders, please contact me before purchasing to discuss options.

Returns & Guarantee

What is your returns policy?

Returns are possible as long as the item is returned in like-new condition — unused, unmarked, and in its original state. Customised or engraved items cannot be returned.

If your item has a manufacturing fault — a stitch that comes undone, an edge that separates, a buckle that fails — contact me and I will repair or replace it at no cost. Leather is a natural material and minor natural variations in grain are not faults; they are a characteristic of genuine full-grain leather.

Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes. Every Vesperi product is guaranteed against manufacturing faults in materials and workmanship for 12 months from the date of purchase. This does not cover general wear and tear, damage from misuse, or leather that has been improperly cared for.

With proper care, a Vesperi product will last for years — potentially decades. Vegetable tanned leather improves with age rather than wearing out. The stainless steel buckle will remain unchanged indefinitely. The brass buckle will develop its own patina over time, complementary to the leather. The stitching is done with heavy-duty polyester thread designed for long-term durability. The Chicago screw fastening means the buckle can be serviced or replaced without replacing the whole belt. A piece properly cared for becomes better with time rather than worse.

Care & Maintenance

How do I care for my leather goods?

Vegetable tanned leather is low-maintenance compared to many materials. Whether it's a belt, wallet, cardholder, or bag, a few simple habits will keep your leather in excellent condition for decades:

Let it dry naturally if it gets wet. Do not place it on a radiator or use a hairdryer — direct high heat can cause the leather to crack.

Avoid prolonged direct sunlight when not in use — UV accelerates drying and can lighten the colour of the leather over time.

Condition every 6–12 months with a small amount of quality leather balm. Apply sparingly, let it absorb, buff gently with a soft cloth. The more you use the leather, the less frequently it will need conditioning.

Store flat or loosely coiled — do not fold sharply or place heavy items on top. For wallets and cardholders, storing them in a neutral space (not in a trouser pocket with coins or keys) will extend their life significantly.

The more you use a vegetable tanned leather product, the better it will look. Regular use keeps the leather supple and accelerates the patina development.

The leather looks dry. What should I do?

Apply a small amount of leather balm or leather conditioner. Work it into the leather with your fingers or a soft cloth, paying attention to the areas that flex most. Let it absorb for a few hours or overnight, then buff with a clean cloth. Start with a small amount — you can always add more, but too much at once can soften the leather excessively.

How long will a Vesperi product last?

With reasonable care, a Vesperi product will outlast several pairs of shoes. The vegetable tanned leather will age and develop a patina rather than wearing out.

The Maker

Who makes Vesperi products?

Every Vesperi piece is designed, cut, stitched, and finished by me — Jarek — in my workshop in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. I do not use a production team, a factory, or subcontractors. Every step of the process is done by me, by hand, to my own standard. That's why please allow 1–2 working days before posting — each item gets the full attention it requires before it leaves the workshop.

You can read more about the Vesperi story on the Our Story page.

Can I visit your workshop or collect an order?

At present I do not offer workshop visits or personal collections. All orders are posted via tracked delivery. If you have a question about a product or need guidance, the best way to reach me is by email or through the contact form on the website.

Gift Orders

I'm buying this as a gift. Can you include a handwritten note?

Yes. At checkout, add a note requesting a handwritten card and I'll include one at no extra charge.
